Pietro Matarrese
Ph.D. Student
Pietro Matarrese received the Bachelor’s degree (2022) and the Master’s degree (2026, Telemedicine curriculum) in Medical Systems Engineering from Politecnico di Bari.
He is currently a PhD student in the nanoPhotonics and Electromagnetics Group (nPEG) of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (DEI), Politecnico di Bari, under the supervision of Prof. Giovanna Calò and Dr. Giovanni Magno. His doctoral research focuses on hybrid photonic–plasmonic platforms for controlling light–matter interaction at the nanoscale, in particular integrated plasmonic nanotweezers for optical trapping and manipulation, and thermoplasmonic structures for localized heating and reconfigurable photonic functions. His work relies on numerical electromagnetic and multiphysics simulations, with a view to biomedical and lab-on-chip applications.
He has also worked on machine-learning models for the early prediction of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease, and as a clinical engineer at IRCCS Giovanni Paolo II in Bari.
